Recommended Conferences and Speakers

Midwest Civil War Civilians Conference -  is a non-profit group created  to provide a focal point for research on topics relevant to everyday civilian life during the era. The next Midwest Civil War Civilians Conference will be held January 26-28, 2007.
Conference on Women and the Civil War The 11th Conference on Women and the Civil War will take place in Washington, DC  the July 24-27, 2009. Details to follow. The Society is please that they have been able to hold prices to the conference to the same levels as in past years, with full conference (including workshops, lectures, meals and the field trip) priced as low as $195 for Society members who register by May 1st.

Civilian Reenacting Groups

The Red Mill Serenaders  The popular music of the 1840's, 50's and 60's returns with the classic sound of Mr. Lemuel's "Red Mill Serenaders" performing a style of minstrel music that is genuine to its original form. A great band to book for any period entertainment (the bones and violin are provided by my husband Wesley!!!)
Atlantic Guard Soldiers Aid Society (AGSAS)  - A wonderful civilian reenacting unit who have great attention to detail and a lot of fun doing it. They excel  in rural southern impressions, but have others as well. Great information on this site.
Victorian Dance Ensemble
- Great period dance group. Keep checking their website for dance instruction. They also offer a video
Gettysburg Civilians - This web site created for the purpose of keeping alive the memory of the citizens of Gettysburg. They deserve to be remembered for the courage and compassion they demonstrated in the year 1863.
Historical Timekeepers - A local Wisconsin civilian re-enacting group that was formed in 2002, with the purpose of reaching out to people who's purpose was to portray life at the home front during the Civil War. We have over 50 active members and continue to grow!

Military Units

15th New Jersey Co A. The 15th NJ Volunteer Infantry Co. "A" is part of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the North-South Skirmish Association. The 15th competes in Regional and National competitions entering Mortar, Carbine Rifle, Rifled Musket and Jr. & Sr. BB Gun teams. In addition the 15th NJ also has a civilian membership who enter the clothing competitions at the Spring and Fall National competitions.
3rd New Jersey  The Third New Jersey is made up of over eighty members dedicated to the common goal of preserving the history of the Civil War era. This is done through educating the public about this most critical period in the development of our nation through accurate and realistic portrayals of soldiers and civilians of that time period.
6th New Hampshire  The 6th New Hampshire Vols. Co. C is a Non Profit civil war reenacting organization representing the men who served in the 6th Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers during the American Civil War of 1861-1865. Our organization was founded in 1988 and has steadily grown into one of the premier Reenacting organizations in the hobby today. We are based primarily out of northern N.J. but we have members that range from upstate N.Y. to Virginia.
2nd California Cavalry - Company F - recreates the original Company led by Captain Augustus Starr from 1863-1866 in Northern California. It is a fully mounted living-history organization performing cavalry drill at public events, and providing historical rides & expeditions for its members over the actual locations ridden by the original Company whenever possible. Led by Captain Donald G. Treco.
5th Iowa Cavalry - We are the first Iowa Cavalry Volunteers (Re-enactors) who want to preserve the outstanding way of life during the Civil War and Indian War Period in the Mid-West. 
7th New York - Is a U.S. Mounted Troup with a dismounted unit. Dedicated to reliving the memory of the gallant horse soldiers of  1861 - 1865
California Historical Artillery Society (CHAS) - Like a pop up story book, the California Historical Artillery Society (CHAS) reaches out and captivates audiences around the nation with it's horse drawn Artillery Detachments.
3rd U.S Colored Infantry, U.S.C.T -Our mission is to educate the masses in the history and service of the Unites States Colored Troops. We support the creation of a United States Colored Troops Memorial Monument and its maintenance. We participate in Living History Presentations and Battle Reenactments  

Museums & Libraries

Red Mill Museum and Village Step back in time and enjoy the ambiance of earlier days when you visit the Red Mill Museum Village, the most photographed spot in New Jersey. Situated on 10 tranquil green acres next to Clinton's waterfall, the museum is just steps across the antique iron bridge from Main Street boutiques, coffee houses and restaurants.

The Powerhouse Museum - Swatches or small samples of fabric have been collected and compiled in the form of swatch books for at least 300 years. The Powerhouse Museum has several volumes containing thousands of bright, un-faded samples of fashionable fabric designs, braids and laces ranging from the 1830s to the 1920s.

Atwater Kent Museum, Philadelphia - The Atwater Kent Museum serves greater Philadelphia by fostering among its citizens and visitors a deeper understanding and appreciation of the city, its historical artifacts and its rich legacy.

Mercer Museum - Towering castle houses dramatic displays of the implements, folk art and furnishings of early America before mechanization.

The Civil War and Underground Railroad Museum of Philadelphia - Founded in 1888 by veteran Union Army, Navy and Marine corps officers, it is the oldest chartered Civil War institution in the United States created to preserve the history of that conflict, and to promote public education through the collection, preservation and display of artifacts and written and photographic documents.

Merchant's House Museum, New York - The Merchant's House Museum is New York City's only family home preserved intact -- inside and out -- from the 19th century.

Lower East Side Tenement Museum, New York - Located in our country's most renowned immigrant neighborhood, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum interprets historic immigrant experience to illuminate the present.

Acorn Hall, Morristown, NJ - The mission of the Morris County Historical Society, as the representative of a county with an exciting and unique place in the history of the United States, is to discover, preserve, and make known the history of Morris County through exhibits, programs, publications, and preservation advocacy.

Historic Maghee Farm located in Kushla, Alabama

The Civil War - Extensive online source of original Civil War resources.  This site has over 3,000 pages of original Civil War content, and is full of incredible photographs, original illustrations, and eye-witness accounts of the defining moments of this Historic Struggle.
