SHEERS

We open our show with a nice selection of Sheer Dresses. Use of sheer fabrics was very popular in the Civil War era, particularly during the warmer months. You will see in the left hand box a photo of the dress, middle box is a description (if available taken directly from the magazine) and finally on the right is either the inspiration picture, photo of the original dress or an additional view of the outfit.

Our first model is Allison. She is wearing a “Pink Checked dress for a young girl” from Godey’s June, 1862 issue. This dress is made from a checked cotton organdy, It is described in the magazine as: “A costume suitable for a young lady" The dress has a Pompadour corsage and muslin chemisette. The corsage is trimmed with a box-plaiting of pink organdy, which trimming is also placed just above the hem of the skirt. The sash is wide pink ribbon. Price for this dress style starts at $365..

Our next young model is Rachel. Her dress  features the typical basic construction for a gauze or sheer dress. It has a gathered bodice and is fashioned from a striped cotton voile fabric. Rachel is also wearing a blue silk ribbon for a bow at the neck. Available in a rainbow of colors starting at $365.

Bette's dress also  features the typical basic construction for a gauze or sheer dress. You will notice in the photo on the right that this dress is constructed with a "demi" bodice or lining underneath. The sleeves have a double puff at the wrist, taken from an original in my personal collection. It is fashioned from a printed cotton voile Available in a rainbow of colors starting at $365.

My sister Barbara is our next model. Her dress also  features the typical basic construction for a gauze or sheer dress. However her dress is made for a summer dance in the evening. The dress closes up the back with hook and eyes. It is fashioned from a woven cotton check voile Available in a rainbow of colors starting at $365.The under  sleeves are made of white cotton organdy and are available separately for $30.

Like Barbara, Jan's  dress is made for both day and evening  summer wear. Jan's dress has an extra component, the pelerine.
